A member of the 2nd Security Forces Squadron Emergency Services Team (EST) clears a room during CQB practice, McConnell Air Force Base, Kansas, July 2014.

The EST Airmen are armed with M9 Beretta 9mm pistols, their standard sidearm.

Note the M4 5.56mmx45mm carbine slung across the lead Airman's back.

Emergency Service Teams are the United States Air Force equivalent of civilian police SWAT teams.

Drawn from a base's Security Forces Squadron, they are trained and equipped to deal carry out special law enforcement operations.

These may include dealing with barricaded suspects, hostage taking, VIP protection and the recapture of aircraft and facilities from hostile forces.
