This includes fielding Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T.) teams to deal with hostage taking, barricaded suspects, active shooters and other high risk situations.

The ESU deploys as Emergency Service Squads (ESS) or 'Trucks', each with an assigned geographic area of responsibility (AOR), together covering the 5 buroughs of New York City.

NYPD ESU deploys a range of specialised vehicles including Radio Emergency Patrol trucks, BearCat and Peacekeeper armored trucks, zodiac inflatable boats and even a number of jet skis.
