A Special Forces sniper peers through the scope of a MK12 Special Purpose Rifle (SPR) during a shooting competition.

The MK12 SPR is variant of the AR15 rifle, modified for use as a designated marksman / sharpshooter weapon.

It is a semi-automatic weapon, designed to use Mk 262 match-grade 5.56mmx45mm ammunition.

Variants of the SPR are in use by units throughout United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), including Special Forces, Navy SEALs and Army Rangers.

It is highly accurate in the light sniper role and, due to its semi-auto action, can also be carried as a primary weapon by members of an infantry squad.
