Special Boat Units, as part of Special Boat Squadrons, were the forerunners to the Special Boat Teams (SBTs) of today.
When Naval Special Warfare Command restructured in 2002, SBU-22 became SBT-22.
PBLs were used in a similar riverine role to the SOC-R boats now employed by SBT-22.
