The 9th Airlift Squadron, 436th Airlift Wing, stationed at Dover AFB, flies the C-5M on a variety missions, including special operations.

While the more specialised Special Operations Low Level II (SOLL II) role has transfered from C-141B Starlifters (now retired) and select C-5Bs over to the C-17 Globemaster, the 9th Airlift Squadron still has a limited special operations role.

If needed, the C-5M Galaxy can carry out delivery, extraction and air drop of special operations forces (SOF) and equipment.

The C-5M Super Galaxy is a modernized C-5A/B/C aircraft that has been upgraded through the Reliability Enhancement and Re-engining Program (RERP).

Upgrades include new General Electric F138-GE-100 engines which provied 22% more thrust, new cockpit systems, airframe improvements
