C-141B Special Operations Starlifter

C141B SOLL II Starlifter
U.S. Air Force photo by Senior Airman Greg Davis

Vintage photo of a C-141B SOLL II (Special Operations Low Level II) Starlifter firing flares from its ALE-40 chaff/flare dispensers.

SOLL II missions include clandestine inter-theater airlift sorties in hostile airspace.

Under the cover of the night and with all external aircraft lights extinguished, C-141B SOLL IIs were capable of operating from austere runways, marshalled by AFSOC Combat Controllers.

The SOLL II role has now been taken over by the C-17 SOLL II aircraft and associated crews.
