Force Recon Marines assigned to the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable)'s Force Reconnaissance Platoon fire their M4A1 carbines on the deck of a US Navy warship, 2003.

Marine Expeditionary Units (MEUs), a type of Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF), typically have two Platoons of Reconnaissance Marines assigned to them: a Battalion Recon Platoon and a Force Recon Platoon.

Battalion Recon Platoon report to the MAGTF's Ground Combat Element commander.

Force Recon Platoons carry out operations for the MAGTF commander.

Force Recon Platoons tend to operate further from the main force of Marines than their Battalion Recon brothers.
