Mounting ambushes is not the main role of Recon Marines, who typically will try to remain hidden, but, as with other basic infantry skills, it is still a skill they maintain to high standards.
Division Recon Platoons, not to be confused with Force Recon Platoons, carry out ground and amphibious reconnaissance in the MEU's ground combat element commander's area of influence ie close to the area occupied by the main force of Marines.
