Wearing breathing apparatus and armed with MP5 9mm smgs, members of a Federal Bureau of Prisons Special Operations Response Team (SORT) move through a smoke filled facility during a training exercise.

SORTs are SWAT-style tactical units trained to respond to various crisis events at Federal Prisons:

  • Prison Riots
  • Assaults on staff or inmates
  • Escapes or attempted escapes
  • Hostage taking
The Special Operations Response Team at a given facility is comprised of volunteers from that facility's active duty staff.
