A Ranger with the 75th Ranger Regiment fires his M9 pistol at a range at Balkh province, Afghanistan.

Note the lanyard attached to the pistol.

This cord prevents the weapon from being mislaid.

The Beretta M9 is the current standard United States Army sidearm.

It is chambered in 9×19mm Parabellum and is fed from a detachable 15-round box magazine.

Rangers may carry the Beretta M9 as their secondary weapon.

They may also carry the Glock 19 pistol, also in 9×19mm Parabellum.

Whichever model of pistol carried, the Ranger will receive extensive training in its use, including two-handed shooting, weak-handed shooting and transitioning from primary weapon - such as a carbine or sniper rifle - to the pistol.
