U.S. Special Operations Forces prepare to load onto 2 M-ATV mine protected vehicles.

Note the CROWs remote weapons turrets mounted on the vehicles.

Fitted with M2 .50 cal heavy machine guns, M240G medium machinhe guns or 40mm grenade launchers, these turrets can be operated from within the ballistically-protected M-ATV cabin.

Coalition special operations forces in Afghanistan have adapted to the threat from IEDs by increasingly switching from soft-skinned, lightly-armored vehicles such as the GMV to heavier, armored vehicles such as the M-ATV, which have been designed to withstand blast from roadside bombs and mines.
