A M240 gunner with a gun team assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment lays down suppressive fire on a simulated enemy compound during a training exercise in National Training Center, Fort Irwin, California, November 2014.

Each Ranger weapons squad consists of 3 gun teams.

Armed with 7.62mm belt-fed machine guns, they typically set up in a support position overlooking an objective in order to provide suppressive fire for a Ranger assault.

The gunner's M240 is fitted with a ELCAN SpecterDR 1.5x/6x Dual Role Optical Sight (7.62mmx51mm ballistic reticle) and is mounted on a M192 tripod.
