Critical Skills Operators (CSOs), assigned to the 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion (1st MSOB) use diver propulsion devices (DPDs) to travel underwater.

Diver propulsion devices are battery-powered submersibles capable of transporting 2 men on or underwater for up to 12 kilometers at an average speed of 12 knots.

DPDs are used by Navy SEAL, Green Beret, MSOB, Force Recon and Battalion Recon combat divers as a means of clandestine amphibious infiltration.

Using the DPDs allow combat divers to arrive at their objective more quickly and with less physical effort than swimming with flippers and with a more covert profile than using surface craft such as Zodiac inflatables.

Their battery-powered thrusters can push through strong tides and currents that would normally defeat divers working under their own power.
